CONTAINS SPOILERS: This is one of those stories which, while it has a good end, is bittersweet because it really should have never happened. I know its a plot device, but I still find the whole premise of it infuriating. The wife says she is looking forward to children, and when the husband is told he can't facilitate that, he arbitrarily decides to casts aside the vows of "in sickness and in health" and "til death do us part" (presumably - we don't actually get to see the vows) to rip his loving wife's heart out, shred it to pieces with implications of infidelity, and "set her free". ARGH! Does he EVEN consider talking to her? Is being unable to father children naturally such a blow to his pride - not matter how much the story tries to couch it in noble motives - that he can't trust his wife to deal with the disappointment and come together with him to find a way to overcome? How about a second opinion? If things can't be done naturally, how about UNnatuarally! He's rich! He can afford to go to a fertility clinic! And barring that, what about adoption?? Adopted children smile and laugh as brightly as natural ones, and wasn't that the actual goal? A happy family?? But evidently he doesn't have enough faith in his wife to not reject him and actually support him through this crisis. Instead he is just going to nobly 'set her free' in the most hurtful manner possible and assume she'll have a 'happy life' without him. So that is the premise behind all the heartache in the beginning. Given all that heartache, it's no surprise she tries to resign when she discovers HE is her new boss, but he actually comes to her home to bully her with legalities, forcing her to stick around long enough to at least train her replacement, and so discovers her son. For a man who 'set her free' to find a 'happy life', he is unreasonably disturbed by the fact she had a child without him and refuses to believe her when she says he's the father. Working is also a truly uncomfortable situation as they both still love each other, but she is terrified of being hurt by him again. The crisis comes when she is called to collect her son from school because he's come down with the flu, and on her way out the door she collapses because she has it worse. When the doctor offers to arrange foster care for her son while she's hospitalized, because she's too ill to care for herself or her child, her noble ex steps up to the plate and promises to care for both. And here we do get to see his nobility actually start to shine as he cares for his (ex)wife and does some serious bonding with this son she had with another man. In fact, the child problem resolved, he's ready to renew their vows and officially adopt his own son. It just continues to infuriate him that some other man had to touch her, and at one point jealousy gets the best of him and their fight sends the son running out of the house straight in front of a delivery truck. With all the instincts of a true father, the husband saves the son at the cost of his own body, and while he's being treated, the wife arranges for one more test to be added to the mix. Once home, when he gets to read the results, he's like, 'I didn't need them. I already love him like a son,' but I'm like, 'yeah, you did need to read it. Now you can stop thinking your wife was unfaithful to you after you "set her free".' All in all, it was sad to think all the pain and heartache could have been avoided if he had just has a little faith in his wife to start with, but it was good to see them reconcile after the fact and set things right. I rented it on sale, but I'm wishing I'd bought it. I'll be keeping it on my wish list so I can hopefully pick it up if it goes on sale again.
