I do like a victorian mystery romance setting, it get real good. The heroine is a scandalous creature with no sense of dignity, as told by the local gossipers and such. The poor heroine can't take it anymore and despite her only friend's encouragement and his proposal, she plans to run to the countryside and live her days out in solace. Such a thing doesn't happen because the hero is there to tell her to not marry his nephew, the heroine's friend. The heroine says she rejected his proposal but the hero doesn't believe. He keeps accusing and leaves but watches when the heroine leaves and thinks she's gone to run to the friend. So, in the next 12 hours, he kidnaps the heroine from her inn, holds her captive, and receives a message from his detective friend that his nephew has been murdered. The detective thinks it may be the heroine but the hero shows her and they realize there's a killer at large. So the three team up to find the killer. It's a dark web that seems to lead back to the heroine who reveals of the strange things like men coming into her room at night, a poisoned drink, and such. During this time, the hero starts to see the heroine for who she truly is and not what the rumors state. They have a special night when the hero is drunk as a skunk and can't remember much of that night. So, the heroine pretends it never happened. They realize the heroine is the target after she's nearly shot in the head, the whole incident makes the hero realize something else: he's in love with the heroine. He asks the heroine to marry him but she rejects it. Later, as they get closer to the truth, more people die making it mystery more dangerous. I won't say anymore for the sake of ruining this fun harlequin but there is a happy ending that you will like and I definitely recommend this book for renting.
