Enthralled by the kindness of a tyrant...
With a baby in her arms, Marian finally arrives at Bellfield Hall. There are terrible rumors about the master of the mansion, Heywood Denshaw. They say that, as the despot of the town, he snatched the manor and the mill away from the person who was supposed to inherit them. When she finally arrives, the master and housekeeper come out together. Marian is captivated by his eyes—they’re as cold as the winter sky. Yet Marian must somehow get him to give her a job!

The story seemed to go quick for me but I didn't hate it. I rather liked the speed as well as all the things brought up. The heroine has come to see if the hero is a proper man to take care of her little boy who was the child of her recently deceased friends. Along the way, she hears horrible rumors about the man and starts to doubt of whether she can carry out their last request. Initially, she is cautious around the man but it takes a factory accident for the two of them to see everything clearly beyond the fog. The heroine sees the corruption of the wealthy and how the hero fights against it day to day with his humanitarian treatment towards his workers and the hero sees the heroine being sound of mind with kicking out the drunk nurse and saving his leg, probably his life too. We do get that hiccup where the heroine reveals the little boy's paternity and he sends her away for lying to him. The hero regrets it immediately and begins a wide search for her in order to bring her back as his wife. We learn in the end, the huge fight between the hero and his stepson was because he wanted his stepson to go to university instead marrying so early but had no idea that teenager's sweetheart was already pregnant. So, the stepson eloped with the sweetheart and they met the heroine in the poorhouse where they became friends. It was quite a nice ending with the two playing out the Christmas party.
